2020 Maverick “Bush Vine” Syrah | New Release

This Syrah is right in line with the 2019 vintage counterpart, following the same style and profile, but BAM! Even more spice, a more floral nose, and a tad more textural and full body, while maintaining elegance and complexity. The nose is explosive, opening with aromas of violets, black plum, stewed raspberry and mocha. The palate is deep, rich and concentrated. Blueberry, black cherry jam, cassis and dark chocolate on the front palate, while the mid palate offers vanilla from the 18 months in oak, and fresh sage. The back end has some tobacco leaves, blackberry, cassis, smoked meat, and a mix of pink and black pepper that lingers and sticks around for a very long time. The tannins are a little sticky, but this is expected for a freshly released wine. This Syrah is a baby at the moment, drinking beautifully and very approachable now, with great things ahead for those with patience! (CWC, 08/09/22).

Unique, intriguing and complex. A fantastic result from a young and promising single vineyard in Okanagan Falls delivering a full body but precise expression of South Okanagan Syrah. While this wine shows a classic and expected spice after the mid palate, this wine stands out for his elegant florality and herbaciouness on the opening. The fantastic touch of graphite and minerality at the end enhance the experience dramatically with this very precise “Okanagan Falls touch” that is so unique to this part of the region. The core of the wine display blackberry, blueberry, dark ripe raspberry, grilled bacon and a hint of expresso coffee. The tannin are still a bite tight but father time should take care of it graciously for you. A first release and superb addition for this now 4 single vineyards bottling Syrahs, makes it a core specialty in Rust’s portfolio a show their dedication to be great at showcasing the best of each potential terroir.

This wine is the poster child of finness and precision, having already achieved Gold at the All Canadian Wine Championships. An outstanding showcase of soft and silky texture. All the components of this wine integrate beautifully at this stage of its life cycle. You’ll find a truly cold-climate Syrah on the nose, with violets, fresh herbs, chocolate, dark cherry and hint of smoked bacon. The palate is very expressive with sweet blueberries, tart cherry, and leather. An extremely long white pepper and clove finish await you. This wine has the potential to age gracefully…another outstanding 2019 red from the Okanagan, and the poster child of the high potential for Syrah on the Naramata Bench. (CWC, 02/01/22). 252 cases made.

2019 Mt. Boucherie Reserve Syrah

The Mt. Boucherie Reserve Syrah has always been a favourite. The 2017 made it to #4 on my Top 10 Wines of 2020. This new vintage shows tremendous promise, even if still young. The potential for a rock star bottle is all there. This is not a fruit bomb, but more based on elegance, length and complexity. The nose is dominated by blueberry, smoked meat, fresh herbs and black cherry. The palate includes blackberry, black cherry, dark plum and black licorice, a slight hint of smokiness, and loads of black cracked pepper on the finish. The finish is really long, and the tannins are already silky but definitely dominant, and should tame down in the next couple of years. The oak adds some sparks on the mid-palate, bringing an extra dimension to this wine and layers of complexity. I absolutely love the blend of Golden Mile and Similkameen Valley fruits. Patience to cellar this wine will be rewarding. Decant before serving. (CWC, 08/04/22).

2016 Summerhill "Spadefoot Toad" Syrah

Surprisingly this wine remains young and filled with tension, although it came down after some time in the decanter. Another year in bottle should bring it to the next level which is the "Rockstar level". The level that I was expecting from a wine with such pedigree. Remember that I rated the 2014 vintage 95pts and my expectations were "sky high" for this release.

The nose is very expressive with aromas of blueberry, cassis, blackcurrant and dark cherry followed by dark chocolate, expresso coffee and smoked meat. The palate is rich and very concentrated with incredible length and complexity. The biggest feature of this wine is the length; it goes on for a good 25 to 30 seconds with great intensity. This is phenomenal.

On the palate, there is a surprising freshness right at the beginning that announces a well-balanced expression of a big and full body wine. Cassis, blue plums and raspberry, sage and mint, coffee and chocolate, white pepper and clove, tobacco box and cedar, are all flavours that parade in my mouth in a beautiful sequence and in a very harmonious way. The long oak treatment (47 months in neutral oak) brings light vanilla and multiple spice flavours along with a tremendous texture. The thing that strikes me the most with this wine is the "beyond impressive" long peppery finish that perfectly complements the level of concentration and complexity. Another "World Class" showing for this highly anticipated release.

🔥 DOUBLE GOLD, All Canadian Wine Championships
This is probably Lakeside Cellars’ best Syrah to date, which is a big deal since the 2017 won Gold at the All Canadian Wine Championships. The 2018 shows balance between alcohol and acidity, and the texture is plush and luscious. The nose offers a hint of earthiness, blueberry, cassis, and a defined violet perfume. The palate explodes right out of the gate, offering flavours of dark cherry, raspberry, cherry compote, licorice, and clove. The tannins are a bit sticky for now, but this wine is just a baby and it will keep softening up over the next five years. (CWC 06/06/22). 216 cases produced.

Pairing: beef and garlic sausage, osso bucco
