Tasting Notes

2019 Carl’s Wine Club "Members Blend"
Ontario, Niagara Peninsula VQA
50% Merlot, 25% Cab Sauv, 25% Cab Franc

With the help and support of our friends and Bella Terra Vineyards, we were able to select four of their top barrels to offer our members a generous and approachable red blend with aromas of cassis, raspberry, dark plum and Christmas spices. The palate is filled with flavours of cherry, raspberry and blackberry while the dark chocolate and the expression coffee leads you to a medium finish with light spice. The lifted acidity makes it versatile at the dinner table but the main purpose of this wine is to be easy drinking, not overly complicated and offering a great value. To be shared with people you care and enjoy spending time with....only 100 cases produced.

Pairing: bacon-cheeseburger, spicy rice stuffed red pepper

2020 Bella Terra Sparkling Rosé
Ontario VQA
95% Vidal Blanc, 5% Merlot| Dry Wine (RS 10.0 g/ltr)
92pts Carl's Wine Club

Beautiful mousse and super lively bubbles. There is a lot of energy in this wine. The nose is expressive with bright aromas of Maraschino cherry and tropical fruits. There is 10 g/l of residual sugar but a great acidity and low alcohol makes this sexy Bubbly very well balanced and appealing. I bet the Vidal was harvested fairly early to preserve this great deal of acidity. The palate is filled with blueberry and raspberry mix. A very long expression on the mid-palate transitions slowly to peach and pineapple. There is a nice crisp and bright gingery finish to add an extra dimension. Lively, fresh and versatile are some of the best descriptive for this well priced bottle of Bubbly.

2020 Bella Terra "Chardonnay Sur Lie"
Ontario, Niagara, Niagara-on-the-Lake VQA
100% Chardonnay | Dry Wine (RS 3.2 g/ltr)
92pts Carl’s Wine Club

With 8 months of aging on its lies, this wine didn't need any oak aging to show texture and complexity. A sensual style of Chardonnay, including bright acidity, purity of the fruits and a great sense of terroir. The 2020 vintage has brought more tropical influence on this wine compared to the previous year, but the quality and the value is just as good. This is just bigger and bolder… with great balance. Nose of key lime meringue, melon, peach and pear start you off on very good notes. The palate is gracious with mango, peach, pineapple, baked apple and a good zip of lemon on the back-end joined with a touch of fresh ginger. The acidity, combined with a lengthy fruity finish makes this wine another outstanding accomplishment. At $19.95, this is once again one of the top values on the market. Buy it by the case before it runs out.

2017 Bella Terra Cabernet Franc
Ontario, Niagara Peninsula, Four Mile Creek VQA
100% Cabernet Franc | Dry Wine (RS 2.0 g/ltr)
93pts Carl’s Wine Club

A “big boy” wine… big, rich and concentrated! At the top end of the full-body spectrum. This is still young and up-front, but time will bring balance and softness to this wine. It’s definitely built for the long run with good, proper and effective usage of oak. The nose is explosive with aromas of blueberry jam, plum, coffee grind and licorice. The palate mirror the nose effectively and also offers richness and concentration in flavors but also complexity and length. The finish is spicy offering notes of nutmeg, cinnamon and cloves. After Tasting the 2015 vintage of this wine (94pts), I have a clear understanding of the long-term potential of this vintage… and it is very promising!

Pairing: pulled pork, soft cheese like gorgonzola

2015 Bella Terra Cabernet Franc 🔥 Limited Library Release! 🔥
Ontario, Niagara Peninsula, Four Mile Creek VQA
100% Cabernet Franc | Dry Wine (RS 3.0 g/ltr)
94pts Carl’s Wine Club | Honourable Mention, Top 10 Wines of 2021

This wine is an exceptional example of a premium, age worthy Niagara Cabernet Franc. The softness of this wine is “off the Chart” and one of the greatest attributes of this exceptional wine. The Cabernet Franc Unfiltered 2015 reveals lovely aromas of red plum, sour cherry, bell pepper, black pepper, wet gravel, cola and sweet tobacco. Full-bodied with palpable tannins, the wine’s journey delivers tart plum and cherry, dried herbs, backing spice and sweet oak profile. Complexity and silky texture highlight this great wine which is in its ULTIMATE PRIME period at the moment and will be for the next 8 to 12 months.

Pairings: Beef brisket, stuffed portobello mushroom

The Story & Winemaker

PondView Estate Winery at Bella Terra Vineyards is nestled amongst the sprawling vineyards of the prestigious Four Mile Creek sub-appellation in the heart of Niagara Wine Country.

The ‘Bella Terra’ - or ‘beautiful land’ - vineyard is a 50 acre grape farm that has been tended to by the Puglisi family since 1974.

This family-owned winery headed by Luciano (Lou) Puglisi draws on grape-growing knowledge and experience that has been handed down from one generation to the next.
The Puglisi Family Story begins in Sicily, many years ago. When Giuseppe Puglisi emigrated to Canada in 1965, he brought with him his passion for grape growing and winemaking. His son Lou has been passed the torch, and now carries on the family tradition. He has embraced this traditional art form and has cultivated some of the finest wines in the Niagara Region. Their vineyard now boasts vines that are 30+ years old.

I chose this winery to feature because I was so impressed with the quality of their wines, especially their Cab Franc and Chardonnays. I was then pleasantly surprised by the energy and welcome from their team when they offered us both free shipping and limited-access wines...we even ended up making the first Carl's Wine Club wine with them, and members voted this winery #1 Winery of 2021!

Answering the ancestral call of the grape, winemaker Fred Di Profio uprooted himself from Toronto 22 years ago; trading the rat race (they’re still winning) for the pastoral serenity of Niagara.

Working as a cellar hand for a couple of vintages sealed his fate forever. He decided to go back to school; a somewhat frightening proposition for someone already into his third decade. A few years later Fred completed his thesis, which was focused on elucidating the effects of various viticultural and oenological practices on the quality of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes and wine. This work has recently been published in the American Journal of Enology and Viticulture.

After completing his honours degree in oenology and viticulture (with distinction) at Brock University, Fred began working full-time in the wine industry. Fred has worked as winemaker for local boutique wineries, as viticulturist for a large, grower-owned winery and continues to work on grape and wine research projects at Brock University.

In his role as winemaker for Bella Terra Vineyards, Fred considers himself especially privileged to work with Lou Puglisi, owner and grape grower with more than two decades of experience, and plenty of accolades. Fred has found in Lou a kindred spirit in his unyielding desire to learn more.

He considers his collaboration with Lou to be not just an opportunity to grow and make great wine, but an opportunity to learn how to do it better; year after year. In Lou's own words, “Every day's a school day.”
