Carl's Notes

Desert Hills Estate Winery is located on the Black Sage Bench, in Oliver, British Columbia.

Family-owned and operated since inception in 2003, Desert Hills cultivates 85 acres of premium vineyards at the northern tip of the Sonoran Desert. 

The hot, sandy setting is ideal for producing vibrant, complex red wines. The family had transitioned their property to vines in the 1990s, prior to opening the winery.

Desert Hills has received the prestigious Lieutenant Governor’s Award for Excellence in Winemaking
(twice!) and Canada’s Best Red Wine, among many others. The three brothers that founded the winery planted some of the first Syrah grapes in the South Okanagan at the ‘Three Boys Vineyard’ which allows them to create some of the most interesting Syrah of the region.

The family’s philosophy remains that wine is grown, not just made, and they extend a great deal of
care and attention to their viticulture practices. 

Their continued passion, innovation and dedication is evident in the well-made wines, and I’m excited for you to discover them!
Desert Hills Winemaker Rajen Toor
Winemaker Rajen Toor is a second-generation owner at Desert Hills and took over as winemaker from the talented Anthony Buchanan in October 2020. Rajen and Anthony worked together for nearly five years, consistently producing solid, award-winning wines year over year.

Rajen is passionate about the winery’s transition to organic practices, a tribute to his lifetime growing up amongst the vines at Desert Hills.

Rajen continues to spearhead the organic transition with regenerative soil practices, beneficial cover crops, and the discontinuation of unnatural fertilizers and sprays.

In my opinion, at this stage of this wine’s evolution, it is one of the best aged Mirage wines. The nose brings me dark cocoa and herbs with distinct blueberry aromas. A focused entry of ripe black plums and dark cherries leading way to boxwood, sagebrush and baking spices to compliment a rich and lasting mouthfeel. Complexity and length have to be the two most obvious qualities of this iconic wine. 600 cases produced.

2016 Mirage

39% Merlot, 20% Cab Franc, 18% Cab Sauv, 13% Malbec, 10% Syrah

From a warm and acclaimed vintage. Full-bodied with inviting notes of cassis, black currant, plum and tobacco. The palate is complex and develops into ripe red berries, peppercorn, cigar box and blueberries. A fleshy and elegant finish is rounded out with a beautiful rich texture. 593 cases produced.

What an intriguing wine. The character and personality of this bubbly is unprecedented. Bottled while still fermenting, then riddled and disgorged by hand, this makes a very special connection between the people who make it and the
people who drink it. This is full of crisp minerality, refreshing stone fruit, guava, and white flowers, a very fragrant wine that delivers layers of refreshing intense fruit with very fine and lively bubbles. 240 cases produced.

2017 Syrah “Three Boys Vineyard”

Planted in 1996, the Three Boys Vineyard Syrah vines are possibly the oldest Syrah vines in the South Okanagan. Dense, structured and concentrated. Dark cherry,
smoked-meat and peppery finish. The tannins are aggressive and dry up your mouth while you are asking for more. Tremendous potential! I believe this wine can score close to 95pts in 3 years! 291 cases produced.

A very well-made, cheerful wine! Juicy with a medium-plus body, this wine attacks right from the get-go. Expressive nose of black currant, black cherry and a touch of graphite. Textured and ready to drink, this wine brings forward ripe berry flavors, and savoury spices. An outstanding value wine…this can become your go-to BBQ wine this summer! 777 cases produced.

This is the more serious Merlot version of the Cactus red blend. Full-bodied with notes of blackberries, toast, vanilla, pepper, and herbs. This Okanagan Blend is masculine with well-integrated tannins that coat the palate leading to a long dark fruit finish. There is a complexity that I found intriguing here and it will take some patience. 454 cases produced.
