Carl's Wine Club

Introducing...

our first Carl's Wine Club wine!

2019 Carl’s Wine Club "Members Red"
Ontario, Niagara Peninsula VQA
50% Merlot, 25% Cab Sauv, 25% Cab Franc

With the help and support of our friends and Bella Terra Vineyards, we were able to select four of their top barrels to offer our members a generous and approachable red blend with aromas of cassis, raspberry, dark plum and Christmas spices. The palate is filled with flavours of cherry, raspberry and blackberry while the dark chocolate and espresso leads you to a medium finish with light spice. The lifted acidity makes it versatile at the dinner table but the main purpose of this wine is to be easy drinking, not overly complicated and offering a great value. We recommend some decanting...we used the Enovino to decant it instantly.

To be shared with people you care about and enjoy spending time with....only 100 cases produced.

Why did we make our first Members Red blend?
  • ...because it's fun! We wanted to do something special to celebrate the club. And since we're a wine club, a members' wine seemed appropriate, no?
  • ...because it's a great wine for the upcoming holiday season...a wine with a fun story and community behind it to give as a gift or just to enjoy on those cozy winter evenings.
  • ...because a portion of the proceeds benefits Habitat for Humanity Niagara’s Build Program. Together, we are helping families have a safe and affordable place to call home and build stronger, healthier communities.
  • ...because you can get Free Shipping with 12 or more bottles and a $20 gift card to the upcoming 'Carl's Cellar' platform!
Like every good wine, this one comes with a back story. Early in the Carl's Wine Club adventure, we hatched the idea of creating a wine that is approachable and yet only available to members.

A wine that is terroir-driven and tells the story of Canadian wine...and a wine that celebrates the great community of wine lovers at Carl's Wine Club.

We partnered with Bella Terra Vineyards in Niagara, ON to bring this little project to life. It even features emoji art on the label...since as one member recently pointed out, we do owe one to the old Facebook for connecting us across distance and Pandemic.

We're so excited to hear what you think! And we hope to make more of these fun wines, driven by our members' participation.

It's always more fun learning about wine when you're sipping wine :) and surrounded by friends.

Cheers,
Carl & Mira

About the Winery

Bella Terra Vineyards is nestled amongst the sprawling vineyards of the prestigious Four Mile Creek sub-appellation in the heart of Niagara Wine Country. The ‘Bella Terra’ - or ‘beautiful land’ - vineyard is a 50 acre grape farm that has been tended to by the Puglisi family since 1974.

This winery was a no-brainer when it came to choosing a partner for our first Members' Red. I've always been impressed with the quality of their wines, especially the Chardonnay Sur Lie which I named ‘top value’ in my Top Wines of 2020. I was then pleasantly surprised by the energy and welcome from their team and the fast, world class customer service they provide.

And of course, they worked with us every step of the way to ensure our first Members' Red is an approachable, terroir-driven and versatile wine at an affordable price!

This family-owned winery headed by Luciano (Lou) Puglisi draws on grape-growing knowledge and experience that has been handed down from one generation to the next. The Puglisi Family Story begins in Sicily, many years ago. When Giuseppe Puglisi emigrated to Canada in 1965, he brought with him his passion for grape growing and winemaking. His son Lou has been passed the torch, and now carries on the family tradition. He has embraced this traditional art form and has cultivated some of the finest wines in the Niagara Region. Their vineyard now boasts vines as old as 30+ years.
Answering the ancestral call of the grape, Fred Di Profio uprooted himself from Toronto 22 years ago; trading the rat race (they’re still winning) for the pastoral serenity of Niagara. Working as a cellar hand for a couple of vintages sealed his fate forever. He decided to go back to school; a somewhat frightening proposition for someone already into his third decade. A few years later Fred completed his thesis, which was focused on elucidating the effects of various viticultural and oenological practices on the quality of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes and wine. This work has recently been published in the American Journal of Enology and Viticulture.

After completing his honours degree in oenology and viticulture (with distinction) at Brock University, Fred began working full-time in the wine industry. Fred has worked as winemaker for local boutique wineries, as viticulturist for a large, grower-owned winery and continues to work on grape and wine research projects at Brock University.

In his role as winemaker for Bella Terra Vineyards, Fred considers himself especially privileged to work with Lou Puglisi, owner and grape grower with more than two decades of experience, and plenty of accolades. Fred has found in Lou a kindred spirit in his unyielding desire to learn more.

He considers his collaboration with Lou to be not just an opportunity to grow and make great wine, but an opportunity to learn how to do it better; year after year. In Lou's own words, “Every day's a school day.”
