Carl's Wine Club
Here's why I chose these wines for our Flash Feature:
  • ...because the 2017 Cuvée Dix-Neuvieme Chardonnay is my front-runner for Wine of the Year: when we tasted over 23 Canadian Chardonnays for World Chard Day, this was the top choice unanimously amongst all those that tasted!
  • ...because the 2018 is not available anywhere...and won't be for the foreseeable future. Get early access before anyone else!
  • ...because the 2016 is from the winery's library and also not available elsewhere...a rare chance to see the progression between the vintages!
  • ...because these wines are about extreme finesse and complexity...all done with low-intervention techniques.
  • ...because Pearl Morissette is the best Canadian Chardonnay producer I've encountered so far.
  • ...because the bonus pick, Va-et-Vient Meritage Magnum comes in an engraved wooden box...a great way to celebrate a special occasion.
  • ...because they gave us reduced shipping rates so you can receive these wines right to your home!

I have a confession to make. I was too scared to rate the 2017 Cuvee Dix-Neuvieme what I really thought it should be.

2016 Pearl Morissette Chardonnay Cuvée Dix-Neuvième
🔥 Exclusive Library Release! 🔥
Ontario, Niagara, Twenty Mile Bench VQA
100% Chardonnay | Dry Wine (RS < 2.0 g/ltr) | 13.5% Alcohol

Oakey on the nose with lemon and honey. The palate is creamy, rich, not overly buttery, with a hint of nuts and brioche, and ripe pineapple. Not completely New World, but more New World than the 2017. Concentration, length and complexity are also a major factor here. Like the 2017, there is a unique "je-ne-sais-quois" that makes this wine one-of-a-kind. 356 cases produced.

Technical Notes:
The 2016 Dix-Neuvième was harvested on September 18th – 20th , hand-sorted and whole-bunch pressed. Fermentation by indigenous yeast proceeded steadily in a combination of old foudres and old oak demimuids
and completed by early spring 2017. The wine was left to age in its fermentation vessels, without battonage for a total of 20 months. Bottled unfiltered and unfined on August 21st, 2018.

Pairing: seafood alfredo, crusted pistachio pork tenderloin

98pts Carl's Wine Club | Highest Canadian Wine Score to Date! July 10/21

To all the Chardonnay lovers, this is the "Real Deal." Officially my #1 Chardonnay producer... Hands down. After re-tasting it twice since my initial review, I got up the courage to call it what it is. This wine isn't a 96 point wine. This wine is the closest thing to perfection I have tasted amongst Canadian wines. I stand by my score now at 98 points. Oh, and by the way, that is my highest rated wine this year so far, and highest score I've ever given to a Canadian wine to date!

💥 Beyond impressive. This can compete with any Burgundy Chardonnay, any day/any time. The depth, the complexity and the structure are unparalleled. The nose opens up with shy aromas of wet rocks, white flowers and ripe lemon before turning towards toasty almonds and vanilla. With four years of age, the wine still shows youth, power and energy. I had to give it an hour in the decanter before completely opening up. And then... the magic happened! Lemon meringue, camomile, vanilla and caramel are some of the primary flavours. Great flinty minerality and baked goods undertones bring another dimension after the mid-palate. The finish is bright, fresh and impressively long. White pepper and ginger brings a spicy layer mixed with the sweet oak at the very end. Wow.... absolutely Wow!  1142 cases produced.

Pairing: rich fish, grilled scallop

Carl's Notes

Pearl Morissette Niagara Vineyards are located in Jordan, Ontario, in the Niagara Region.

I chose to feature Pearl Morissette because I was completely blown away by the quality and beauty of their world-class, low-intervention wines. They have rightly earned international acclaim for their wines and highly innovative approach to winemaking. Recently they have also paired their passion for wine with a passion for great food, at the Pearl Morissette on-site restaurant...definitely worth going out of your way to visit, post-covid.

Founded by Francois Morissette, a talented Quebec-born winemaker, and Mel Pearl, a Toronto land developer, the winery combines the old world techniques that Francois learned through his working travels and studies in France, with his own intuitive philosophy.

Their truly original, natural, and exceptionally delicious wines are often sold out, and an other-worldy experience when you can get your hands on them.

Each of these wines speaks a unique language and transports you through a different immersive sensory experience. Enjoy!
François Morissette prefers the French term ‘le vigneron’ to describe what he does. He doesn‘t see himself just making wine - he sees himself guiding the vines from the ground to the glass, and helping them fulfill their destiny.

Similarly, François doesn’t make wine for Ontario. He makes wine for the world, especially for those who appreciate his approach of minimal-intervention, purity, and low sulphur.

He is classically trained, having worked on the Grand Cru terroirs of Frédéric Mugnier of Chambolle Musigny, Christian Gouges of Domaine Henri Gouges, and Jean-Marc of Domaine Roulot. Further oenological training was also undertaken at L’Université de Dijon.

He attempts to uncover the inherent nature of each and every vintage. The result of this focused dedication is a selection of wines that speak for themselves.

At Pearl Morissette, no two wines are ever the same.

Very limited quantities! Order while supplies last.
