Summerhill Pyramid Winery

  • ...because they make a truly remarkable Syrah: I rarely use ALL CAPS to describe a wine but this one was worth it!!! 95 points & #2 in my Top 10 Wines of 2020!
  • ...because they gave us early access: the new 2018 Summerhill Grüner Veltliner is a pre-release and sure to be one of this year's summer superstar wines!
  • ...because you can try Canada's first Blanc de Franc: already aged 10 years and ready for your enjoyment!
  • ...because they are Canada's first certified organic, certified biodynamic, and certified B-corp winery! So you can feel great about what's in your glass.

I rarely use ALL CAPS to describe a wine, but at least one of the wines in this pack elicited this response when I reviewed it back in December 2020. I am thrilled to introduce these special wines to you!

Below you will find my notes on this winery and the wines offered in an exclusive 6-bottle tasting pack.

If you do choose to order a pack (or two!) you'll be part of Carl's Wine Club VIPs, which includes our private Facebook group and an invite to our live virtual tastings with special guests from the winery.

It's always more fun learning about wine when you're sipping wine :)

Cheers,
Carl

Carl's Notes

Located on the East side of Okanagan Lake in Kelowna, Summerhill boasts a 1/8th replica pyramid in
which their wines are aged and improved. Founded in 1991 by Stephen Cipes, Summerhill Pyramid Winery is Canada's most visited winery.

Within a year of moving his family of six from New York to the Okanagan, Stephen committed to using only organic processes at the winery, and so began the long and successful history of Summerhill.

I chose this winery to feature because Summerhill remains one of the most innovative, visionary and
eco-friendly wineries in the country. Each wine they make is about listening to what nature has to offer and what the wines need...and it shows in the quality and exceptional taste of the wines.

Summerhill has a long list of firsts in the Canadian wine industry to showcase the meticulous care they place in their winemaking: the winery is certified organic, certified biodynamic, certified B Corp, and even vegan!

The wines in this tasting pack are outstanding, and I truly hope you enjoy them as much as I have.

Born and raised in Calgary, AB, winemaker Michael Alexander grew up in a wine loving family. While studying European history Alexander took a wine course, instantly falling in love with the intriguing and delicious world of wine.

Michael started in Summerhill’s wineshop, and then in the cellar working with Winemaker Eric von Krosigk. After attending Niagara College’s Wine and Viticulture program, he returned to Summerhill and is now their head winemaker.

Having spent a third of his life as a member of the Summerhill family, Alexander has a passion for the wines, the people, and the place.

His winemaking continues the tradition started by Eric von Krosigk to listen to the vines and produes wines that showcase nature’s bounty for each unique vintage.

The Wines

2014 Spadefoot Toad Syrah
BC VQA, Okanagan Valley
100% Organic Syrah | Dry wine (RS 0.2 g/ltr)
95pts Carl’s Wine Club – Wine of the year candidate

First impression notes: Honestly, this is REMARKABLE.... ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC! A nose of blackcurrant and dark cherry compounded by tobacco and cedar. The nose on it’s own is worth the price of the wine. What makes this wine so special is the texture. I have rarely tasted a wine with that much of a silky texture. It's so fluffy! The dark fruits I had on the nose are right back on the palate lifted up from the white pepper and a complex long finish. There's a lot of elegance here. Nothing is in your face, instead this wine comes together like a symphony. Add a touch of cloves and bay leaf at the end for even more complexity. Again, the texture makes this wine very special! This wine is priming right now!

My more recent notes: Texture, Texture, Texture… OMG – so amazingly silky and velvety! Deliciously ripe aromas of blackberry, raspberry, and cherry kirsch which mingle with alluring notes of vanilla, sweet tobacco, leather and clove. On the palate, delight in flavours of black cherry, boysenberry, white pepper and a hint of black olive. This wine is priming at the moment. I would love to have unlimited supply of this wine, so I can enjoy forever! 489 cases produced.

Pairing: Pepper-crusted beef tenderloin, Chinese spiced duck
Drink now until 2027 | Winery price: $50.00

2011 Cipes Blanc de Franc
BC VQA, Okanagan Valley
100% Organic Cabernet Franc| Dry wine (RS 5.1 g/ltr)
93pts Carl’s Wine Club

What a treat! Canada’s first and only Blanc de Franc rosé. In 2011, the Cabernet Franc grapes were in perfect condition to be made into sparkling wine. We may never see these conditions again! Made in the traditional method and aged “en tirage” for 3 years. This alluring, one-of-a-kind (made only once in 25 years) wine shows gorgeous notes of Eccles cake, peach, red currant, dried raspberry and earth. The finish is dry and balanced. 800 cases produced.

Pairing: Roasted turkey, cedar plank salmon
Drink now until 2030
Winery price: $55.00

2018 Summerhill Grüner Veltliner
BC VQA, Okanagan Valley – Summerhill Vineyard, Kelowna
100% Gruner Veltliner| Dry wine (RS 5.8 g/ltr)
91pts Carl’s Wine Club

This wine is different and wonderful! For many reasons, like mouth-watering acidity, freshness and complexity, the Grüner will become a Summer Superstar. This biodynamically certified white has a deeper colour than I would expect but it is naturally made and I’m guessing with little to no sulphur. Unique, textured mouthfeel with notes of dried apple, starfruit, earthy hay and cracked peppercorn with a saline finish. A wine to discover!!! 258 cases produced.

Pairing: Miso glazed sablefish, veal cutlet
Drink now until 2025
Winery price: Not available yet

2013 Reserve Barrel Organic Merlot
BC VQA, Okanagan Valley
100% Organic Merlot | Dry wine (RS 2.3 g/ltr)
92pts Carl’s Wine Club

Another very special wine! Truly one of a kind. A full bodied, smooth red with notes of blueberry, raspberry, blackberry preserves and a hint of chocolate. Bright acidity, firm yet round tannins and distinct minerality leave your mouth watering for the next sip. This wine is drinking beautifully now but will age for 5+ years. Decanting is recommended. 1164 cases produced.

Pairing: Grass feed beef, truffle risotto
Drink now until 2025
Winery price: $35.00
2017 Summerhill Cabernet Franc
***The 2017 is now SOLD OUT however we have access to the new 2018 Summerhill Cabernet Franc! ***

BC VQA, Okanagan Valley
89% Cab Franc, 11% Cab Sauv, 100% Organic | Dry wine (RS 0.8 g/ltr)
90pts Carl’s Wine Club

2017 is celebrated as a phenomenal vintage marked by a hot, dry summer which allowed for soft, round tannins and exceptionally balanced flavours to develop in the grapes. Velvety, smooth, fresh, and characterful. This elegant, medium-bodied wine has notes of red plum, capsicum, and sage. Soft, smooth tannins and mouthfeel lead to a long, fresh finish with notes of bright red fruit lingering. 616 cases produced.

Pairing: Rabbit cacciatore, BBQ smoked brisket
Drink now until 2026
Winery price: $28.00

2018 Summerhill Ehrenfelser
BC VQA, Okanagan Valley
100% Ehrenfelser | Off-Dry wine (RS 17.6 g/ltr)
Best of Class, Gold Medal - 2018 Pacific Rim International Wine Competition

The wine is a blend from two very different vineyards. Grapes from the hot, southern Okanagan region of Osoyoos at Inkameep Vineyards provide richness, depth, and tropical undertones, while grapes from Summerhill Vineyard in the northern Okanagan region of Kelowna add vibrant freshness and stone fruit character. A fruit explosion with notes of apricot, pineapple, mango, blood orange, lemon, and gooseberry. It offers palate coating acidity and sweetness, leading to a long finish. 280 cases produced.

Pairing: Thai green curry, halibut with mango compote
Drink now until 2023
Winery price: $20.00
Total Winery Price Per Pack: $215 plus tax/deposit
